Why most skincare routines fail

The most common reason skincare routines do not deliver the results we hope for is surprisingly simple — they are built around the wrong skin type. Without knowing your true skin type and condition, every product choice you make is essentially a guess. And guessing with something as complex and individual as your skin rarely ends well.

Dehydrated skin is frequently mistaken for dry skin — and the treatments for each are completely different. Oily skin is often over-stripped with harsh products, making excess sebum production worse. Sensitive skin is confused with reactive skin. Combination skin is treated with one-size-fits-all products that help some areas and harm others.

A professional skin type assessment from Gillian removes all of that uncertainty — giving you a genuinely accurate understanding of your skin, and the confidence to make the right choices from that day forward.

What is your skin type?

Skin type refers to the natural characteristics of your skin — determined largely by genetics, hormones, and how much oil your skin naturally produces. There are six recognised skin types, and understanding which category — or combination — applies to you is the essential first step in any effective skincare journey:

Normal skin

Well-balanced, comfortable, and relatively easy to maintain. Normal skin has small pores, a smooth texture, and few imperfections. It still needs a consistent, well-chosen routine to preserve its health and protect against the effects of ageing and environment.

Dry skin produces less sebum than it needs, often feeling tight, rough, or flaky — particularly after cleansing. It benefits from rich, nourishing formulations that replenish lipids, support the skin barrier, and lock in moisture. Without the right products, dry skin is prone to sensitivity and premature fine lines.

Oily skin produces excess sebum, often appearing shiny, with enlarged pores and a tendency towards congestion and breakouts. The key is not to strip the skin — which triggers even more oil production — but to balance it with lightweight, non-comedogenic products that regulate without disrupting.

Combination skin is oily in some areas — typically the forehead, nose, and chin — and dry or normal in others. It requires a nuanced approach, with different products or techniques used for different zones, rather than a single product applied uniformly across the face.

Sensitive skin reacts easily to products, temperature changes, and environmental triggers — often presenting with redness, stinging, tightness, or irritation. It needs gentle, minimal, fragrance-free formulations and a carefully constructed routine that prioritises barrier repair and protection above everything else.

Often confused with dry skin, dehydration is a condition rather than a skin type — and it can affect any skin type, including oily skin. Dehydrated skin lacks water rather than oil and typically presents with dullness, tightness, and the appearance of fine surface lines. It requires targeted hydration rather than heavy oils or creams.

As skin ages, it undergoes significant changes — reduced collagen and elastin production, loss of firmness and density, changes in texture and tone, and a greater tendency towards dryness and sensitivity. Mature skin benefits enormously from carefully chosen actives, deep hydration, and treatments that support natural regeneration and renewal.

What does a skin type consultation with Gillian include?

Your consultation with Gillian is a dedicated, one-to-one appointment focused entirely on your skin. Using professional assessment techniques, Gillian will examine your skin in depth and build a complete and accurate picture of your true skin type, current condition, and specific concerns.

Your consultation includes:

  • A thorough review of your skin history, lifestyle, diet, stress levels, and any medications or health factors that may be affecting your skin
  • Professional skin analysis to assess skin type, hydration levels, texture, pore size, pigmentation, sensitivity, and signs of ageing
  • A clear and honest explanation of your skin type and what is happening beneath the surface
  • An assessment of your current skincare routine — what is working, what is not, and what needs to change
  • Personalised skincare product recommendations tailored precisely to your skin type, concerns, and lifestyle
  • A bespoke morning and evening homecare routine with step-by-step guidance on the correct products, the right order of application, and the techniques that make the difference
  • Advice on professional in-clinic treatments that could complement your homecare and deliver even greater results
  • A written summary of all recommendations to take away with you

One of the most important things to understand is that your skin type can and does change throughout your life. Hormonal shifts, seasonal changes, ageing, stress, diet, medication, and even the products you have been using can all alter your skin type over time — sometimes significantly.

Many people are still using a skincare routine they put together years ago, without realising that their skin has changed and their products have not kept pace. If your routine does not feel like it is working the way it used to — or never really worked at all — there is a very good chance that your skin type has shifted, and your routine simply needs to evolve with it.

Gillian’s consultation does not just tell you what your skin type is today. It gives you the knowledge and understanding to recognise when your skin is changing, and the confidence to adapt your routine accordingly.

A skin type consultation with Gillian is ideal for anyone who:

  • Has never had a professional skin assessment and is not sure of their true skin type
  • Is spending money on products that are not delivering results
  • Is overwhelmed by skincare advice and does not know where to start
  • Has noticed changes in their skin and is not sure how to respond
  • Wants to build a routine from scratch and get it right from the beginning
  • Is experiencing persistent skin concerns — dryness, breakouts, dullness, sensitivity — despite trying multiple products
  • Is preparing their skin ahead of a professional treatment or injectable procedure
  • Simply wants to understand their skin better and stop wasting money on the wrong products

There is no such thing as a skin concern too simple or too complex for this consultation. Whether you are a skincare novice or an experienced enthusiast who feels their routine has stopped working, Gillian’s expertise will add genuine, lasting value to your skin journey.

Following your consultation, Gillian can prescribe a fully personalised skincare routine using AlumierMD, Reform and Skinade —  leading medical-grade skincare brands available exclusively through trained and certified professionals like Gillian.

At Eye and Face Clinic, Gillian works in close collaboration with Consultant Surgeon Dr Janice Brady, ensuring that patients receiving injectable treatments — such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skin boosters, or polynucleotides — also benefit from the very best in personalised homecare to maximise and sustain their results.

Understanding and correctly caring for your skin type is fundamental to getting the most out of every professional treatment you invest in. Gillian’s knowledge ensures that your at-home routine works in perfect harmony with everything we do for your skin in the clinic.
