YAG

What is a YAG capsulotomy?

After cataract surgery, the thin membrane (capsule) that holds your new lens in place can sometimes become cloudy. This is called posterior capsule opacification, and it can make your vision blurry again, even though the cataract operation was successful. A YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick, painless laser treatment that makes a small opening in this cloudy membrane to restore clear vision.

How long should I allow for my appointment?

Although the laser only takes a few minutes, you should allow about an hour for your clinic visit. This is because your eye needs to be dilated (widened) with drops before the procedure, which takes some time to work, and you will usually be checked briefly afterwards before you leave.

When should my vision improve?

Many people notice an improvement straight away, but it can take a day or two for your vision to settle fully, as the eye needs time to clear any tiny floating particles released by the laser. If your vision has not improved within a few days, or seems to be getting worse, contact your eye clinic.

How will my eye feel afterwards?

  • Your vision may be blurry immediately after the appointment, mainly because of the dilating drops — this wears off after a few hours.
  • You may notice small floaters or specks in your vision for a few days; these usually settle on their own.
  • may feel slightly gritty or sensitive to light for a short while.
  • You should not drive yourself home if your eyes are still dilated — please arrange a lift or transport home.

When to seek help

Contact your eye clinic if you experience increasing pain, a sudden increase in floaters or flashing lights, or a sudden loss of vision, as these should always be checked promptly.
