Ptosis Surgery
Ptosis is the medical term for a drooping upper eyelid. It occurs when the tiny muscle that lifts the eyelid becomes weakened, stretched, or detached, or when the nerve supply to that muscle is affected. Surgery is deisigned to correct the droop and restore balance to the anatomy. It involves gently adjusting the tendons or muscles that lift the eyelid

How Ptosis Affects You
A drooping eyelid is more than a cosmetic concern. Depending on how far the lid falls, ptosis can:
- Reduce your field of vision, particularly your upper and outer vision
- Force you to lift your chin or raise your eyebrows to see clearly, leading to neck and brow ache
- Cause tiredness, eye strain, or headaches from constantly working to keep the eye open
- Make you look tired, sleepy, or older than you feel
- Affect your confidence and how you feel about your appearance
Am I Suitable for Ptosis Surgery?
You may be a good candidate for ptosis surgery if you have a droopy eyelid that is affecting your vision or your quality of life, and the droop has been stable (not actively fluctuating, as can occur in certain neurological or muscular conditions) for a reasonable period of time.
Ms Brady will confirm your suitability after a full assessment. You will have the surgery explained to you and will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have
What to Expect on the Day of Surgery
Ptosis surgery is almost always carried out as a day case, meaning you go home the same day. On the day of your procedure:
- The procedure itself typically takes between 45 – 90 minutes, depending on whether one or both eyelids are treated and the technique used
- You will rest in a recovery area with a light dressing before being discharged home the same day
What to Expect on the Day
Ms Brady carries out ptosis surgery at UPMC Aut Even. You will be checked in and welcomed to the surgical day ward. Ms Brady will see you and answer any last minute questions and concerns you may have.
In theatre we will conduct last minute checks and a small injection of local anaesthetic is given to each eyelid, ensuring you are completely numbed.
The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic with light sedation so you are awake but comfortable. In a minority of cases general anaesthetic is preferred.
The surgical approach varies depending on the underlying cause and severity of ptosis but in general it takes 45-60 minutes per side or 90-120 minutes for both sides. This will be discussed with you by Ms Brady at your initial consultation.
During the procedure Ms Brady may ask you to open your eyes at different stages to refine the lid position and contour.
The eyes are padded after the surgery, however there is the option of removing one pad for patient comfort and navigation after an hour or so.
You can usually go home on the day.
DAY 1
The eye pad from surgery is removed. Begin antibiotic ointment and lubricating eye drops as directed.
DAYS 1-7
Cool compresses and sleeping with the head elevated can help.
DAYS 3-5
Use lubricating drops or ointment as advised to protect the eye.
DAY 7
Sutures removed
WEEKS 1-2
Avoid exercise, heavy lifting, and other strenuous activity
UP TO 12 WEEKS
The final eyelid position and appearance are usually visible by around 12 weeks.
Success Rates
Ptosis surgery has a high rate of success in appropriately selected patients, with the great majority of patients achieving a significant improvement in eyelid height, symmetry, and visual field, along with a more rested, alert appearance. Reported success rates for achieving a good eyelid height and symmetry are generally in the region of 90–95%, although a small proportion of patients may need a minor adjustment procedure if the lid settles slightly higher or lower than planned.
